We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Position: Chief Engineer

Job Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers

Roles & Responsibilities
Engineering Department Leadership & Technical Oversight:

  • Serve as the senior engineering authority on board, with overall responsibility for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all main and auxiliary machinery, propulsion systems, power generation units, and engineering
  • personnel.
  • Provide technical leadership in the planning, coordination, and execution of maintenance, repair, and operational activities within the engine room, ensuring full compliance with vessel operating procedures, class regulations, and international standards (ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL).

Machinery & Systems Management:

  • Oversee the operation and performance of main propulsion engines, auxiliary generators, pumps, compressors, fuel treatment systems, HVAC, and ballast control systems.
  • Utilize diagnostic tools and condition monitoring technologies (e.g., vibration analysis, thermographic inspection, oil analysis) to anticipate machinery failures and enhance operational reliability.
  • Maintain and calibrate automated control systems, PLCs, and engine monitoring instruments to ensure optimum machinery performance.

Preventive & Predictive Maintenance Administration:

  • Develop and execute preventive and predictive maintenance schedules in alignment with the vessel’s Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
  • Verify completion of maintenance routines, system checks, and recordkeeping for audit and inspection readiness.
  • Supervise maintenance during voyage and coordinate dry-docking, overhauls, and repair work in collaboration with shore-based technical superintendents.

Fuel, Lubricant & Resource Management:

  • Monitor and manage bunker fuel and lube oil consumption, maintaining precise fuel logs, engine performance reports, and oil record books in compliance with MARPOL Annex I regulations.
  • Implement fuel efficiency measures and emission control practices in line with IMO energy efficiency (EEXI/CII) standards.

Technical Reporting & Documentation:

  • Prepare comprehensive engineering reports, performance analyses, and incident summaries for submission to shore management.
  • Maintain machinery history records, spares inventory logs, and maintenance documentation in digital and hardcopy formats per audit requirements.

Crew Supervision & Competence Management:

  • Lead, mentor, and appraise the engineering crew, ensuring that all engine room ratings and officers maintain valid STCW certifications and competency levels.
  • Conduct safety briefings, technical drills, and skill development sessions to promote operational excellence and knowledge transfer.

Safety, Compliance & Emergency Preparedness:

  • Enforce strict adherence to the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, MARPOL conventions, and company HSE standards.
  • Serve as the on-board emergency response leader for engineering-related contingencies — including engine failures, fires, fuel leaks, and power blackouts.
  • Coordinate with the Vessel Master and HSE Manager during drills and safety audits to ensure readiness and regulatory compliance.

Liaison & Coordination with Shore-Based Teams:

  • Interface with the Fleet Technical Superintendent, Classification Societies, and Flag State Surveyors for inspection, certification, and repair approvals.
  • Support the vessel’s operational readiness by providing timely feedback on engineering conditions, repair priorities, and spares requirements.

Qualifications & Requirements
Chief Engineer (Enhanced Version):
Professional Certification & Licensing:

  • Valid STCW III/2 Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (COC) with endorsements for Diesel, Gas, and Turbine Propulsion Systems.
  • Completion of Advanced Marine Engineering Courses in Predictive Maintenance, Dynamic Positioning Systems, Engine Room Automation, and Power Management Systems.
  • Certifications in ISM Code, MARPOL, SOLAS, ISO 9001/14001/45001 Lead Auditor, and Advanced Offshore Safety & Emergency Procedures are highly desirable.

Academic Background:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or Offshore Technology from a recognized institution.
  • Specialized postgraduate modules in Marine Machinery Diagnostics, Energy Efficiency Optimization (EEXI/CII), and Digital Engine Monitoring Systems are an advantage.

Experience & Technical Mastery:

  • Minimum 8years of progressive experience in marine engineering, including at least 5 years in offshore operations on PSV, AHTSV, FISV, or crew boats.
  • Proven expertise in main propulsion engines, auxiliary generators, hydraulic systems, ballast systems, fuel treatment, HVAC, and PLC-controlled automated systems.
  • Advanced experience in predictive maintenance techniques such as vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, and real-time engine performance monitoring.
  • Demonstrated capability in managing complex fuel systems, optimizing bunker consumption, and implementing IMO energy efficiency and emission control measures.

Leadership & Crew Management:

  • Track record of leading multi-disciplinary engine room teams, mentoring junior engineers and ratings, and fostering a culture of operational excellence and safety compliance.
  • Proven ability to implement engineering competency matrices, STCW certification compliance, and technical skill development programs.
  • Strong aptitude for incident management, root-cause analysis, and emergency response coordination for engineering contingencies offshore.

Operational & Strategic Competencies:

  • Advanced proficiency with Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS), digital engine monitoring platforms, and asset management tools.
  • Experience liaising with Classification Societies, Flag State authorities, OEMs, and shore-based technical superintendents to ensure regulatory compliance and optimal vessel performance.
  • Exceptional analytical, documentation, and reporting skills, capable of producing detailed engineering performance reports, audit-ready maintenance logs, and predictive maintenance recommendations.

Other Attributes:

  • Ability to operate under high-pressure offshore conditions, make swift technical decisions, and ensure uninterrupted vessel operations.
  • Strong commitment to HSE excellence, continuous improvement, and adoption of innovative marine engineering technologies.
