Job Position: Back-End Engineer

Profile


  • An exciting and varied position, we are looking for an analytical, results-driven Back-End Engineer who will work with the Product development team. As a back-end engineer, you will spearhead the troubleshooting and improvement of the current back-end applications and processes. Your primary focus will be the development of all server-side logic, definition and maintenance of the databases, and ensuring high performance and responsiveness to requests from the front-end. You will also be responsible for integrating the front-end elements built by the front-end engineers into the relevant application(s).
  • To be successful in this role, you should have experience with back-end engineering and basic understanding of front-end technologies. If you also have an interesting collection of projects that you have worked on, we’d like to meet you.

Job Purpose

  • Collaborating with internal teams and vendors to fix and improve products
  • Documenting development phases and monitor systems
  • Ensuring software is up-to-date with latest technologies
  • Ensuring the integration of user-facing elements developed by the front-end engineers with server side logic
  • Building reusable code and libraries for future use
  • Developing tools and applications by producing clean, efficient code
  • Optimization of our platforms for maximum speed and scalability
  • Implementation of security and data protection
  • Designing and implementation of data storage solutions
  • Developing high-quality software design and architecture
  • Identifying, prioritizing and executing tasks in the software development life cycle
  • Automating tasks through appropriate tools and scripting
  • Reviewing and debugging code
  • Performing validation and verification testing
  • Performing other relevant tasks as may be assigned by reporting line manager

Requirements

  • Analytical mind with problem-solving aptitude
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or any related field/degree
  • Basic understanding of front-end technologies and platforms, such as JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3
  • Good understanding of server-side CSS pre-processors, such as LESS and SASS
  • Understanding accessibility and security compliance
  • Good understanding of Micro-services and user authentication and authorization between multiple systems, servers, and environments
  • Integration of multiple data sources and databases into one system
  • Management of hosting environment, including database administration and scaling an application to support load change
  • Data migration, transformation, and scripting
  • Setup and administration of backups
  • Outputting data in different formats
  • Understanding differences between multiple delivery platforms such as mobile vs desktop, and optimizing output to match the specific platform
  • Creating database schemas that represent and support business processes
  • Implementing automated testing platforms and unit tests
  • Proficient knowledge of two or more of these back-end programming languages and frameworks: PHP, Laravel, Lumen, JavaScript, Python, Scala etc.
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as GiOWASP security principles
  • Understanding of “session management” in a distributed server environment
  • Experience using system monitoring tools (e.g. New Relic) and automated testing frameworks
  • Familiarity with various operating systems (Linux, Mac OS, Windows etc.)
